Headquarters for the educational materials nonprofit institution, Helios Foundation, located in Phoenix, Arizona was designed by Architekton and Colwell Shelor Landscape Architecture to provide a resilient, 100-year lifespan working environment. The architecture is formed in two stories over one level of naturally ventilated open space, currently used for parking. An oculus in the roof near the entrance provides a vertical gesture for water and sunlight, resonating with the Helios mythology. Water chain pendants fastened in a ring at the roof are suspended to a level just inches above the surface of a reception pool, fifty feet below. The water sounds are gentle. The pendants are illuminated in the evenings.
