Designed by landscape architect, Paul Friedberg, in 1975, Peavy Plaza was an immediately welcomed urban oasis in Minneapolis. After years of use, Peavy recently underwent a thorough refurbishment, led by the landscape architecture firm, Coen + Partners. Fluidity helped with the sympathetic restoration of the Plaza’s iconic, extensive water features. The work involved strategic improvements to the original design to meet contemporary accessibility Codes, improve environmental sustainability, increase programming activities with more flexible operations, and simplify maintenance. Central to the effort was the replacement of the Plaza’s central, foot-deep pool with a quickly drainable version—a membrane-deep walking pool. When drained, the central space quickly provides a large, functional area for concerts, farmers’ markets, yoga classes, and other community-oriented events.
